OCTOBER 3, 2009.

WALKWAY OPENING CELEBRATION DIRECTOR: Jeanne Fleming
Parade of the Towns As the culmination of Walking on Air Procession, The Parade of the Towns embodies the Walkway ethic of grass-roots celebration, enlisting the artistic reflections of over a thousand Hudson Valley participants of all ages and backgrounds. In May, 50 artists from Dutchess and Ulster Counties were chosen to represent their towns in the Walkway Opening. After attending a series of orientation workshops we led in June, each artist was commissioned to make an original ceremonial Town Emblem to be carried in procession. In addition, each artist will lead his or her community in the creation of 25 unique flags, to be carried aloft as a Christo-esque canopy of local color. The resulting artworks will continue to have a curatorial life after the Opening, as flags are sewn into town quilts, and emblems are editioned as buttons and displayed in public spaces throughout the Hudson Valley. |
